Phthisis Bulbis

Definition

Phthisis bulbis, or atrophy of the eye, is the terminal stage of several serious diseases of the eye. When phthisis bulbis manifests itself, the eye becomes soft and often painful. No longer functional, an enucleation (extraction of the eye) is required.
