Dry Eyes : A Common Condition
Dry eyes are a relatively common eye condition that targets mostly people over the age of 40. For some people, this problem can be serious and require consultation with an ophthalmologist. It is said that the eye is dry when the production of tears is insufficient or of lesser quality. People with dry eyes experience daily discomfort. The discomfort can even become unbearable in some more serious cases.
Causes and Symptoms
Dry eyes are mainly caused by a decrease in the quantity or quality of tears in the eye. Some external factors, such as allergies, taking certain medications or the quality of the environment may also be involved. Several patients also have Meibomian gland dysfunction. These glands secrete the meibum that is responsible for protecting the tear film to ensure proper lubrication of the eye.
The symptoms of dry eye are varied, we note, among others:
- Burning sensation;
- Decreased vision (blurred vision);
- Foreign body sensation
- Light sensitivity.
If you suffer from dry eyes and experience daily discomfort, do not hesitate to make an appointment with your optometrist.
Several different treatments will be recommended depending on the nature and importance of the problem. When eye dryness is considered minor, topical treatments such as eye drops (artificial tears), certain ointments or even vitamin intake (Omega-3) may be suggested. For patients more severely affected, surgery may also be recommended.
At Bellevue Clinic, specialized optometrists offer LipiFlow® treatment for patients whose dry eyes is caused by Meibomian gland dysfunction. This effective treatment uses a thermal pulsation system to dislodge the blockage in only 12 minutes.
